Totem pole and outdoor sculpture

I did a lot of research on totem art, I discovered that the word totem came from the Algonquin language. So I set myself the goal of understanding this art and then transposing it through our stories. In 2004 I obtained a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts for an exchange between indigenous artists, the goal was to meet the master sculptor Haida Reg Davidson to know more about the creation process and to verify the belonging of the word "Totem". According to him, the word “totem” did not exist in the Haida language. So to bring this art back to us with our stories, I created a whole new word in Algonquin to designate the kind of sculpture we call Totem Pole. It is “MITIKMO” meaning “the tree which tells us”.
